Playing The Devil’s Tune

Marchioness Zoe is so damn bored. Parties are a chore, suitors as facile, stupid little men, business is unspeakably dull and the only brief flickers of entertainment in her life are her flirtation with music and musicians. Last night she entertained a saturnine foreigner from Chicago who tinkled the piano keys in ways she had never before experienced. This morning, he has left a single manuscript on the piano – “The Devil’s Tune”.

She knows she shouldn’t, but the ennui is overwhelming. Almost against her will, she finds herself drawn to the piano. The tune seems simple enough to play, although it gets wilder and wilder. As her fingers tap out the notes, she finds herself playing it! She hadn’t meant to, but the tune itself compels and commands. The fugue builds to a crescendo… and there is another presence in the music room with her. A dark entity of lust and sin, a perfect fit to her own jaded appetites. The piano continues to play as her hands leave the keys and a claw reaches out of the formless darkness to grab her, shake her like a rag doll… ropes appear from nowhere to bind her in place! She has played the Devil’s Tune, and he will have his due….
